Waltz Dancing Levels From Beginner to Advanced

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Today I’d like to share with you an inspiring video that demonstrates the difference between waltz dancing at a basic beginner level, right through until advanced “gold” level – all in one dance. Perhaps it might inspire you to improve your dancing, as it inspired me. I can tell you from personal experience, that when you learn to waltz at a higher standard, it fells so much better than when you simply learn beginners’ steps.

But we all have to start somewhere, so this is not meant to discourage social dancers; only to encourage all who love waltz dancing to reach out for what is possible.

In this demonstration, the teacher shows his students how you can start off waltz dancing with some basic steps, injecting a bit of “rise and fall” into the footwork. Then you can add some body shaping and more sweeping strides to what you’re doing, to give it that “flow”. After that, you can add some more advanced figures and mix them up with your improved technique in order to bring you up to “gold” standard.

Waltz Dancing Levels

Like many sports, the level of dancing skill is represented by metals which increase in value as you progress. However, to explain this comprehensively, we should start at the very beginning, which is before the grading of levels begin. So here is a summary of waltz dancing levels.

Newcomer:-  This is for those who believe they have “two left feet” … someone who has never had dance instruction but would like to learn. This is the level where you learn the basic steps and timing – and probably in the context of some sequence dances.

Beginner:-  At this level, you begin to learn how to be a good, confident and comfortable social dancer. You’ve probably got a few dance routines under your belt, many of which have names such as the Alpha Waltz, Swing Waltz, Emmerdale Waltz, etc. You’re confident with the steps for these dances and you no longer have to “look at your feet” all the time.

Intermediate:- At this level of waltz dancing, your figures and patterns become more challenging. You learn to create a stronger swing and feel more confident with “stepping it out”. You will have learned a few more sequence dances which contain these more advanced figures such as the “double spin”. You will also be aware of the names of many figures so that if someone “calls the dance” by these names, you will know what to do.

WALTZ DANCING – ADVANCED LEVELS

Bronze:- This is by far the most popular because it is the easiest to master and many are comfortable with it. You dance to different music and have a number of waltz routines that you can fit with the music tempo. It is a step up from social dancing in that, you will know how to hold your frame and rise and fall with the steps you take.

Silver:- When you wish to become a more advanced dancer, you aim for silver. Silver dancers are distinguished by versatility and style in all the popular social dances.  This is a beautiful and practical standard of dancing for those who wish to be sought after on the dance floor.

Gold:-  The Gold level of waltz dancing is for the person who wishes to become an excellent ballroom dancer.  Gold dancers have the confidence which comes with a complete and thorough knowledge of all the major ballroom dances.  Advanced style and poise in all of the ballroom dances sets the Gold dancer apart from all others.  These types of dancers are also considered “competition style” dancers.
