Trinity Waltz

Trinity Waltz Dance Steps

The Trinity Waltz is a modern sequence dance. The dance script was composed by John Pople. It is a 32 bar dance (see paragraph numbers) in the usual 3/4 waltz time and should be danced to a 1-2-3, 4-5-6 rhythm to music at a tempo of 48-50 beats per minute. We commence the dance in ballroom Upper shadow hold with both the man and lady facing diagonal-to-wall. Only the man’s steps are described here, with the Lady dancing as a counterpart, unless otherwise stated – in which case, the lady’s steps are in italics.

The man lowers (bends his legs) slightly and uses “heel leads” to step forward; backward steps are drawn with his toe (again, lowering himself) and whenever he brings his feet together both man and lady should rise up onto their toes. If you find yourself confused with all the technical terms, you can skip to a video presentation of the dance below.

2.  Now the man moves his right foot forward in a diagonal-to-centre direction (4) and swivels to the right (5). He closes his left foot to his right foot without changing his weight so that he is now facing the line of dance again (6).

Trinity Waltz – 2nd Movement

5.  The man brings his right foot back against the line of dance and commences to curve to the left (1-2). His left foot follows back against the line of dance and continues a slight curve to the left while moving slightly to the centre (3).

6.  Now the man’s right foot follows back against the line of dance so that he is now facing the wall and still in Shadow Hold (4-5). He then brushes his left foot to his right foot without changing his weight (6).

7.  Releasing lady’s right hand, the man now holds his position for two bars while he turns the lady out to end in Extended Facing Position (the Lady commences turning to the left by moving her left foot forward in a diagonal-to-wall direction) (1-2) The man holds his position (and the Lady continues turning to the left, bringing her right foot to the side and moving diagonal-to-wall) (3)

8.  (The Lady continues turning to the left to end backing the line of dance and brings her left foot back down the line of dance while keeping her left hand in the man’s left hand and her right arm held to the side in Extended Position) (4-5) (the Lady brushes her right foot to her lef without changing weight so that she is now facing diagonal-to-centre against the line of dance on the man’s left side) (6)

10.  The man continues turning to the left so that he is now backing the line of dance. He does this by bringing his left foot back down the line of dance while keeping the Lady’s left hand in his left hand with his right arm held to the side in Extended Position (4-5). The man then brushes his right foot to his left foot without changing his weight. He should now be facing diagonal-to-centre against the line of dance and on the lady’s left side and taking up Shadow Hold again (6).

11.  The man now commences turning the lady to the right, without releasing his hold. His right foot goes forward in a diagonal-to-centre direction against the line of dance (the Lady, without releasing her hold, moves her right foot forward, diagonal-to-centre against the line of dance and commences turning to the right under the man’s raised arms and does a Toe Pivot) (1-2). The man brushes his left foot to his right foot without changing weight (the Lady closes her left foot to her right foot) (3).
